The Golden Egg Read online

  He nodded. “I will keep us safe while you rest.”

  “You’re the best fiancé a girl could ask for.” I smiled as I leaned against the seat. For a few minutes, I thought my anxiety would prevent me from sleeping, but when I closed my eyes and thought of Elron, I was able to sleep without seeing the goose in my dreams.

  Hours later, we were back at the lodge and he was shaking me awake.

  That night, we slept soundly, and the next day we watched seven movies. Elron gave up after the third bowl of popcorn, claiming he needed to eat something more nutritious.

  A few days later, I got a call from my contact with the state police. The two geese and their egg had been moved to an animal sanctuary specializing in rare and dangerous animals. Some combination of Elron’s elven ability and my spell had kept them in the warehouse until they could be safely collected. The police had also found evidence of more than thirty-three people who’d gone missing in the general area, though none since the day Elron and I discovered the geese. They were trying to figure out which ones might have been the geese’s meals.

  Two months later, the town’s entire police force, mayor, city council, and another two dozen “upstanding” citizens were arrested for various crimes. Some for comparatively minor infractions, like not reporting the suspicious deaths, and others for charges as serious as accessory to murder.

  While contributing to the capture of two golden geese was a great public service, selfishly, I really did hope my next vacation had a little less excitement and a little more rest.

  Elron handed me a cup of tea. “Are you feeling well? Is there anything else you need?”

  I tugged him into the empty spot on the sofa next to me, then carefully set my drink down before hugging him as hard as I could. “Just you.”
